hammer block safety spring tc contender no.38,
Safety Spring (38) TC Contender, all generations (not for G2) aka hammer block safety spring.
Stop misfires! One of the most problematic conditions with Contenders is misfires, often times misdiagnosed as headspace or a weak hammer spring. When the sear rotates it releases both the hammer block and the hammer at the same time with the result there is a race between the hammer block and hammer. The hammer block must drop out of the way of the hammer completely before the hammer impacts the firing pin. If the block does not win the race the hammer dings the top of the block with the result of the hammer often loosing enough inertia that it does not fire the primer, even though the primer may appear well dented. Sometimes it can be a matter of keeping the block channel clean and even slightly lubed, but more than often the spring needs to be replaced. Our hammer block safety spring is CNC designed and manufactured in the USA for the maximum strength possible. Replacement of the spring is something almost anyone can do for themselves. With the trigger guard removed, remove the interlock screw (59), then push out the sear pin (40) and sear (39). The block safety (37) will normally stay in place until you pull back the hammer very slightly to release. I guess I don't need to tell you that now is a great time to clean the components and area of the frame. Reassembly is in reverse order, remember to pull back hammer slightly and then pushing block safety up and then let the hammer hold in place. Next install sear, sear plunger and spring, finally reinstall interlock with interlock spring and interlock screw (numbers on components relate to schematics part number available for purchase. Don't take a chance on a misfire, replacement of the springs is a great way to keep your Contender operating even better than new.
Please note that some of the older contender hammer block does not have a hole that the spring sits down into. Simply shorten this spring to about the same length as the spring you pull out but about 1 coil longer, function test if needed remove more of the length to match closer the spring removed.
